ABSTRACT | ||
Sunil Gangopadhyay's debut poetry collection, Eka Ebong Koyekjon (Alone and a Few), was published in 1958, with poet Sameer Roychowdhury as the publisher and a cover designed by Purnendu Patri. Comprising forty-eight poems, this collection showcases the young poet's relentless quest to establish his unique voice. In his pursuit of literary individuality, Gangopadhyay diverges from his contemporaries, breaking away from conventional thought and consciousness to embark on a bold new literary experiment. The poems in Eka Ebong Koyekjon reflect a spirit of defiance and an unwillingness to conform. The poet resists submission, striving instead to transcend boundaries and articulate a new, emerging consciousness. This collection provides an early glimpse of Gangopadhyay’s genius, positioning him as one of Bengal’s foremost poets after Jibanananda Das. The poems are thematically cohesive, rich in imagery, and deeply engaging for readers. Sunil himself often expressed uncertainty about his poetry, once stating, “I am extremely hesitant about my own poetry. I have not yet reached the level of perfection at which a poem becomes complete or, one might say, transcendental.” Yet, his determination to achieve such transcendence is evident in Eka Ebong Koyekjon. The collection lays the foundation for his lifelong dedication to the craft of poetry, infusing his work with an intoxicating intensity—both in its form and in its emotional depth. | ||
