ABSTRACT | ||
The all-round development of a society depends on proper education. The implementation of proper education mainly depends on two factors- Student and Teacher. Healthy and comfortable partnership of these two moves the education process forward. In the present time the society is not getting the benefits of that education. But the history of this India bears witnesses to a fair education system where the thirst for knowledge of students has been satisfied by the unstinting education of fatherly Brahmavid gurus, and a healthy and normal society has been created. In the Upanishadic era, we see the student as a disciple and the teacher is known as a Guru or Acharya. The Upanishads inform us about the minimum qualifications that a student needs to have in order to acquire knowledge. The Upanishads advise a five-year-old boy to enter Brahmacharya. This was a must for all children. One of the qualifications of a student was his inquiring mind. Apart from this the Brahmacharya, Tapah and Sraddha were also the qualities of students. Their education was completed in the presence of the Brahmavid Guru. The characteristics and duties of the Guru have been discussed in the Upanishads. The Guru lights the fire of knowledge in the heart of the disciple. The Upanishads do not say that the Guru should be only a Brahmin who knows the Vedas. We see many people like Brahmins, Kshatriyas, kings, ordinary householders, fathers, husbands, etc. as Guru. Even examples of learning from non-humans are found in the Upanishads. | ||
