ABSTRACT | ||
Throughout human history, every civilization that
has risen and fallen has built a rich foundation of music. The contribution of
music's silent hum to everyday life is immeasurable. Spiritual seekers have
chosen this music as a means of achieving closeness to God. The practice of
achieving this closeness to God through music is ancient in the Indian
subcontinent. As a continuation of this tradition, a spiritual practitioner
named Narendra Nath Dutta was born in the nineteenth century, who later became
Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda was a devoted practitioner of music.
However, he did not follow the path of earlier music practitioners. Swamiji was
simultaneously a vocal sadhak, music expert, and interpreter. Through his
dedication, sacrifice, rigorous practice, and extraordinary talent, he elevated
his music to unparalleled heights. By acquiring spiritual knowledge of Eastern
and Western music, he became a versatile musician. This research paper will
discuss in detail how Swami Vivekananda became a guide in modern spiritual
music, the depth of his knowledge in music philosophy and above all, the
influence of world music on his life and the high position he occupied in
composing spiritual music. | ||
