Samaresh Basu was an eminent Bengali writer in modern literature. He wrote different type of novels, short stories. His first novel ‘Uttaranga'(1951) focuses on the life realities of the hard working people living on both banks of the Ganges. Nearly a half century after writing ‘Uttaranga', Samresh Basu once again wrote a novel about Ganga river and related with the life of the fishermen and others living beside the river. Among the river centred novels, samaresh Basu's ‘Ganga'(1957) stands a unique place. In this novel, he described how this struggling life of the fishermen and their traditions revolves around the Ganges. They survived their dangerous life with the uncertainty and their old traditional beliefs and customs. The fishermen fate, believes in good and evil, Ghosts and spirits, goddesses and ritualistic worship—all of these aspects are shown in the novel.
