ABSTRACT
In term of living in a society, we must follow sets of beliefs, customs, rituals and other religious activities. If we tend to analyse the historical aspects of these social factors, we can discover both the scriptural and folk elements in their core formation; and it finds its root back to folklore and folk life. Many religious sub sects were formed beside the mainstream religions. They were emerged to enjoy the freedom, which were an escape of priests and maulavis and their burdens of codes of conducts. One of these sub sects are Sahebdhani sect. The founder of this sect is Muliram Pal. But his son Charan Pal preached this sect and represented it to a huge amount of people. It was emerged in the middle of 18th century in Nadia District. Although it was emerged in Dogachiya, the ‘mool asan’ was later shifted to the village named Brittihuda. Every year, the annual mela or festival is celebrated in Agradeep in Chaitra Ekadashi and also in Brittihuda village in the auspicious time of Baishakhi Purnima. Both the Hindus and Muslims are involved in the religious activities. The mantra is “Kling Deenanaam Deenabandhu” for the Hindus and “Deendayal Deenbandhu” for the Muslims. Interestingly, the Hindu bhaktas have Muslim gurus and vice versa. Sahebdhani sect does not uphold discrimination based on race and religion. The chief disciple of Charan Pal is Kubir Gosain who is the chief lyricist of the sect. It is clears from his songs that how much generous the sect is. They represent Hindu-Muslim harmony in this community as in other folk religions. The role of Sahebdhani sect in maintaining communal harmony will be highlighted in the main article.
