Types of Inference: A Discussion on Ancient and Neo-Navya Nyaya

ABSTRACT | ||
Maharsi Gautama in his Nyāya-sutra
when he discussing about the identification and classification of Pramana says
in ‘panchamsutra’. That there are three types of anumanas Pūrvavat,
śeṣavat
and sāmānyatodṛṣta
Inferences. Linguist Vatsyayana discussion it in his first and second
Discustion. Next time we notice that Uddyotakara did not mention there anumans
instead of in his Nyayavarttika in the first discussions Kevalānvayi,
kevala-vyatireki and anvaya-vyatireki inferences. On the other hand books of
Later Nyāyayika
like. Tattvāchintamoni
by Gangeśa
Upadhay discussed the three types of
anumanas. Then Annam Bhatt’s in his ‘Tarkasamgraha’ he discussed Svārtha
and parārtha
Inferences and Kevalanvayi, Kevala-vyatireki and anvaya-vyatireki. Biśvanāth,
Nyāya-Panchanan
in his ‘Bhāṣāparicceda’ book memtioned Svārtha
and parārtha
Inferences. So the books by navya Nyāyayikas
we got reference Svārtha
and parārtha
Inferences and Kevalānvayi,
kevala-vyatireki and anvaya-vyatireki that
types of anumanas. We did not get there Pūrvavat, śeṣavat
and sāmānyatodṛṣta
that types of anumanas. So sutrakar and bhasakar discusses Pūrvavat,
śeṣavat
and sāmānyatodṛṣta,
but why there philosophers did not
mention ther anumanas are trying to discuss. | ||
