ABSTRACT | ||
Mahasweta
Devi's work is not only a treasure trove of Bengali literature, but has also
earned her the status of one of the greatest Indian authors. She was involved
in various movements and initiatives during the second half of the 20th
century. Based on this experience, she undertook numerous projects aimed at
supporting the lower classes and tribal communities across several states in
India, including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. She
connected with their lives, feeling their happiness, sorrow, hopes,
aspirations, livelihoods, exploitation, and deprivation. This empathy is also
reflected in her literary work and the characters she created. Therefore, it is
said that Mahasweta's pen acted as their representative.
In her various novels and stories, such as "Bhat,"
"Sanjh-Sakaler Maa," and "Jatudhan," the issue of food
shortages, along with other pressing problems, is particularly evident. The
analysis of these three stories illustrates how people's mindsets have changed
regarding the scarcity of food and highlights the helplessness experienced by
individuals facing these shortages. | ||
