The Bengali Middle Class in the Twentieth Century: The Context of
Selected Stories by Manik Bandopadhyay

ABSTRACT | ||
After the World War-I, the morale value of
people was discouraging in the world and in the midst of crisis; a number of
writings were developed by the Bengali writers. The Bengali writers created a
history by their valuable writings in this period. The famous Bengali writer
who has been remembering for his revolutionary writings after World War-I was
Manik Bandyopadhyay. Manik Bandyopadhyay was born at the time of Swadeshi
Movement, Boycott Movement and First World War. He witnessed the critical days
after the Great War when the world was facing economic depression. As the
capitalists continuously exploited the innocent villagers, the people of
Bengali middle class became the pray of this misdeed. Similarly, the British
domination was also increasing day by day. This created atrocities in the minds
of the people of Bengali middle class. So, the main topics of the writings of
Manik Bandyopadhyay included the conditions of middle-class people, movements
of labour class etc. Interesting was that, Manik Bandyopadhyay’s writings
reflected his inclination towards Marxism. The novels of Manik Bandyopadhyay
namely, Putulnacher Itikatha, Dibaratrir Kabya, Padma Nadir Manjhi etc. and the
short stories namely, Otashimami, Pragaitihashik, Chotobokulpurer Jatri, Sare
Sath Ser Chal etc. are considered important and valuable creations of this
well-known writer. All the writings of Manik Bandyopadhyay contain the lives
and other issues of the people of Bengali middle people. | ||
