Baul Philosophy: Origins, Development, and the Contributions of Practitioner-Artists Niranjan Mondal, Researcher, Department of Bengali, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The Baul philosophy is a unique strand of Bengali culture, shaped through spiritual thought, social context, and music. Its origins lie in a blend of folk religious beliefs and the influences of Tantra, Sufism, and Vaishnavism. The Bauls prioritize the exploration of life’s fundamental rhythm, emphasizing the doctrines of body and human nature. The development of Baul philosophy was notably influenced during the 18th and 19th centuries. Figures such as the mystic Lalon Shah, Harinath Majumdar, and Bhaba Pagla popularized Baul thought through music and poetry. They stood against social divisions, religious dogma, and superstition, advocating humanistic ideals. Through their practice and music, Baul practitioners and artists led people into a deeper understanding of body metaphysics. Their songs reflect the simplicity of life, insight into the human mind, and the connection with the divine. The philosophical nature of Baul music serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for spiritual liberation. Today, Baul philosophy is an integral part of Bengali identity. This tradition holds a special place in the rural life of Bengal and within the broader global Bengali culture.
