In the Mirror of Reality: The People’s Theatre Organization of Birbhum (1969–2020): Rise and Decline
Dr. Ankush Das, Independent Researcher, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
In Birbhum district, modern theatre practice was started at the beginning of the last century at the hands of zamindars. Gradually, this new trend emerged from the dead bodies of the district's folk theatre. Initially, the control of this new theatrical genre was in the hands of the zamindars or the rich. However, due to changing socio-economic conditions, within the next few decades, this control started to shift to the hands of people from different strata of society.
After independence, district theatre practice started from adolescence to adulthood. The growing influence of the Left movement during this period created a fertile ground for Gananatya (IPTA—Indian People's Theatre Association) in the district. As early as the sixties, the first Gananatya branch, 'Rupantar Gosthi,' sprouted in Birbhum with a short life span.
After about ten years, the tide of Gananatya Sangha came to Birbhum district.  Many Birbhum branches and preparation branches of the Gananyatya Sangha emerged one by one in the rural and urban areas of the district. Although branches also died prematurely at various times. Apart from the political influence, the changing social order of the last century and the following decades has played an important role in creating the context of this breakdown.
The Gananyatya Sangha's nearly forty-year footprint remains in the theatre practice of the entire Birbhum district. In this context, this separate article was written first on the beginning and consequences reasons for Birbhum's Gananatya Sangha will give a clear idea. An informative discussion of the political influence on the district Gananatya also reflects the West Bengal Gananatya Sangh.
