The Peer cult and literature of Bengal: A comprehensive analysis Dr. Sudipta Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Bengali, Kharagpur College, West Bengal, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
The influence of Sufism in medieval Indian history
is a significant cultural phenomenon, with its reach extending to various
regions, including Bengal. In Bengal, Sufi traditions merged with local folk
practices, giving rise to Peer culture or Peerism. This unique cultural synthesis
resonated deeply within the folk society, leading to the development of an
independent body of Peer literature, which incorporated elements of folk
traditions.
One of the most notable examples of this literary
tradition is the Pala of Banabibi. This popular Peer-poem occupies a special place in
Bengal’s cultural landscape, blending religious, social, and ecological themes
into a cohesive narrative. By utilising Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of
Folk-Literature as an analytical tool, this article seeks to explore the
recurring motifs within the Pala of Banabibi. The aim is to understand the
cultural significance of Peer literature and demonstrate how the motif-index
method can offer insights into the narrative structures and thematic concerns
of such texts.
This study not only highlights the integration of
Sufi culture into Bengal’s folk traditions but also sheds light on how these
influences created a distinctive literary tradition that continues to hold
cultural relevance. | ||
