ABSTRACT | ||
Proverbs are an important branch of folklore that emerge from traditional life. They are the product of human wisdom and long-standing experience. Proverbs are enriched with brevity of expression and the essence of human experience. They encapsulate the deep emotions of rural life as well as the distilled wisdom of long-lived traditions. Proverbs form a highly developed category of folklore, deeply rooted in cultural traditions. They originate from the collective experiences of ordinary people. Over time, communities have created proverbs in harmony with their ways of life. Though proverbs were originally crafted by people of the past, they have now found a place in refined modern literature. The creation of every proverb is rooted in long-standing social experience and specific events. Rural people may not have scientific knowledge, but they possess deep understanding of nature’s moods, storms and rain, tides, trees and plants, rivers and mountains, animals, and their surroundings. They keenly observe human nature, social customs, the struggles of daily life, selfishness, and other aspects of human behaviour. It is from this awareness that proverbs emerge. Proverbs play a significant role even in the smallest family units. Many proverbs have originated based on household relationships and domestic life. Nearly every country in the world has proverbs. A proverb is a universal art. The structure, meaning, and usage of proverbs are nearly the same everywhere. However, due to geographical and cultural differences, variations exist. That is, similar proverbs take different forms and imagery in different places. Proverbs are a crucial element of folklore, and they remain deeply relevant to contemporary life. In modern times, proverbs appear in various forms of literature, including poetry, novels, essays, newspapers, dramas, speeches, advertisements, and even daily conversations. Proverbs are the shortest form of folklore, yet they are rich in meaning. No matter how brief a proverb is, it carries significant depth. Proverbs are primarily the product of practical human experience rather than mere emotions. They have the ability to express profound meaning in just a few words. They can be compared to tightly crystallized structures—just as crystals are formed through a scientific process, proverbs emerge from the practical knowledge and experiences of society. Within these proverbs, the reflection of society itself can be observed. | ||
