Human Evolution in the Light of Aurobindo’s Philosophical Thought: A Survey
Joydev Hazra, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, Kazi Nazrul University, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
This article explores the concept of human Emancipation (Manbottaran) and the transformation of consciousness through the lens of Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Philosophy. Unlike conventional progress or social development, Sri Aurobindo defines ‘Emancipation’ as an internal ascent—moving from the depths of primal instincts to the heights of divine consciousness. While traditional Indian philosophy often views ‘emancipation’ (Mukti) as a release from worldly existence, Sri Aurobindo presents a revolutionary perspective where the ultimate goal is the manifestation of a ‘Divine Life’ here on Earth.
The core of this study focuses on the Triple Transformation, which Sri Aurobindo identifies as the essential process for reaching the Supramental state:
1. Psychic Transformation: The process of bringing the ‘Psychic Being’ (the soul-element) to the forefront to govern and purify the mind, life, and body.
2. Spiritual Transformation: The ascent of consciousness into higher spiritual realms and the subsequent descent of divine peace, light, and power. This stage involves transitioning through the levels of Higher Mind, Illumined Mind, Intuitive Mind, and Overmind.
3. Supramental Transformation: The final and most decisive stage where the Supermind (Truth-Consciousness) descends to radically transform the very fabric of terrestrial nature, erasing the divide between knowledge and will.
The article concludes that Sri Aurobindo’s vision of Emancipation is not merely a philosophical theory but a practical roadmap for a collective shift in human existence. By transcending the limitations of the mental ego and establishing the Supramental Truth, humanity can evolve into a new divine species, turning earthly life into an expression of unity, harmony, and infinite delight.
