ABSTRACT | ||
To analyze the multifaceted crises in the marital lives of
modern men and women, this dissertation selects three novels by three modern
Bengali literary figures. The selected novels are Bankim Chandra
Chattopadhyay’s Bishabriksha (1873), Rabindranath Tagore’s Ghare Baire (1916),
and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Grihadaha (1920). Although numerous other
works, such as Bankim’s Kapalakundala (1866), Krishnakanter Will (1878), and
Rajani (1877), Rabindranath’s Chokher Bali (1903) and Jogajog (1929), and Sarat
Chandra’s Charitraheen (1917) and Sesh Prashna (1931), reflect similar marital
issues, we have focused on these three novels for ease of analysis.Examining
these three novels reveals a continuity in the crises of modern marital
relationships. A common theme among these novels is the presence of love
triangles. In Bishabriksha, the entry of Kundanandini into the married life of
Nagendra and Surjamukhi creates a love triangle, leading to significant marital
conflict. Similarly, in Ghare Baire, the arrival of Sandip in the marital life
of Nikhilesh and Bimala forms a love triangle, introducing multifaceted marital
crises. In Grihadaha, the active involvement of Suresh in the married life of
Mahim and Achala exacerbates their marital problems. Bankim Chandra resolves the
consequences of love triangles through moral and societal values. Rabindranath
seeks resolution through self-awareness and the realization of inner freedom.
Sarat Chandra, on the other hand, transcends moral and self-awareness to depict
redemption through remorse and the acknowledgement of stigma.In this
dissertation, we aim to explore the multifaceted crises in the marital lives of
modern men and women through these three seminal works by these literary
giants. | ||
