ABSTRACT | ||
In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the relevance of the Varnáshramadharmas in contemporary society. In the current societal context, we have observed the misinterpretation and misuse of the Varnaśramadharmas. However, we argue that, in the context of the present chaotic society, the correct understanding and application of the Varnáshramadharmas may become highly relevant. It may help us to become responsible and moral beings. On the one hand, it specifies the limitations of our actions and teaches us to control ourselves. On the other hand, when properly understood, the Varnáshramadharmas encourages self-realisation, self-purification, and self-improvement. However, we argued against the traditional Varnadharmas based on birth. Following the Bhagavadgitā, we contend that the Varnadharmas should be based solely on merit (guṇa) and deeds (karma). It not only helps to realise one’s given duty but also maintains true societal balance. | ||
