Md. Ripon Mia, PhD Fellow, Institute of Bangladesh Studies (IBS), University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh
ABSTRACT
Ever since the establishment of the state of Pakistan, it has been planned to make Urdu the only state language, excluding Bengali, the language of the majority of the people. The language movement arose on the occasion of the demand to make Bengali the state language. The cultural and economic progress of the Bengali nation was associated with the demand to make Bengali the state language. Bengali nationalism was developed based on Bengali language. And the ultimate form of this Bengali nationalism was the independent state of Bangladesh. Like all political movements during the Pakistan era, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman played an active role in the language movement. By establishing the demand of Bengali language, he thought about building the future of the Bengali nation on the language question. Full recognition of Bengali language was not achieved during Pakistan period. Taking over the governance of independent Bangladesh, Bangabandhu took the initiative to introduce Bengali language at all levels and took various initiatives to teach Bengali language as a medium of education. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's philosophy of education in independent Bangladesh was centered on the medium of education.
Key words: Bengali language, Language Movement, Bengali Nationalism, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Independent Bangladesh.
