In
this present article, we are attempting to understand the inner quarters of the
Sen family of Kolutola, Kolkata (former Calcutta) within the backdrop of 19th
Century Bengal, through the autobiographical narrative of Saradasundari Devi
(1819-1907). Saradasundari Devi was the wife of Pyarimohan, the second son of
renowned wealthy Dewan Ramkamal Sen of colonial bengal’s newly emerging city
Calcutta, and the mother of Brahmananda Keshab Chandra Sen. Through the life
story of Saradasundari Devi, we will explore the inner world of the Sen
household and the lives of its women, as well as the family ethos of the
household and the cohabitation of people with faith in both Hinduism and
Brahmoism. We will read her autobiographical narrative in conjunction with
social history and analyse why this memoir of a women from inner quarters of
the Sen household has become an essential document for understanding the family
and social history of 19th century Bengal. | ||
