Dombi in Selina Hossain’s Novel ‘Nil Moyurer Joubon’ : In Love, Protest, and Resistance
Sukanya Panja, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Since the very dawn of civilization, the role of women in society has been of paramount importance. Yet, society has not been willing to accord them recognition with ease. Nevertheless, women have never faltered in their struggle to claim their rightful entitlements. Dombi—a character in Selina Hossain’s novel ‘Nil Moyurer Joubon’ (The Youth of the Blue Peacock), set against the backdrop of the 10th to 12th centuries—stands as just such an indomitable figure. Although the novel features an array of female characters, Dombi remains truly extraordinary in terms of her personality, her capacity for love, and her spirit of resistance. Her spirited persona continues to evoke a sense of awe even among the women of the twenty-first century.
