ABSTRACT | ||
Selina Hossain is a famous Bangladeshi writer. She was born in 1947 in Rajshahi. Her book ‘Ekaler Pantaburi’ (2002) contains many short stories. One important story is ‘The Lament of Four Young Men.’ The story takes place thirty years after the Liberation War of Bangladesh (1971). It is about four friends who often meet and talk about politics. Bashar is one of them. He is honest and loves his country. Bashar thinks people should not live with the Razakars after the war. The other friends know Bashar is right, but they feel sad and hopeless, so they do not agree with him. When Bashar is with them, they do not feel lonely. But when he goes to Dhaka to study, the others become unemployed and lonely. Slowly, the bad influence of a decaying society turns them into criminals. Their discussions turn on a girl named Mandira, and they talk about her physical beauty. Later, Bashar dies in Dhaka. Mandira goes to console Bashar’s mother, which makes the four young men jealous and more frustrated. When Mandira’s brother Dilip scolds them for following her, they threaten him. At last, the four young men kidnap Mandira. While taking her away, they hear her mother crying. When they try to harm Mandira near the river, she faints. Hearing her mother’s cries, they remember their own mothers and feel guilty. Finally, they return Mandira to her mother and punish themselves for their wrong doing. | ||
