Satyajit Ray’s Short Stories: The Representation of Supernatural Imagination Surajit Saha, Research Scholar, Dept. of Bengali, Cotton University, Guwahati, Assam, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The word 'ghost' fills our minds with excitement, sometimes with fear, sometimes with wonder. Our fear of ghosts has fueled our interest in hearing and reading ghost stories. Whenever we hear a ghost story, a question arises in our minds: do ghosts really exist in the world? Many say that it is entirely an illusion. Fear arises from loneliness in human life; and the concept of the existence of ghosts stems from this fear. Others say that ghosts certainly exist; that's why we feel a shiver down our spine and our minds tremble with fear in haunted houses, crematoriums, cemeteries, and during the dead of night. Like foreign authors, many in Bengali literature have also written stories about ghosts. Like other writers, Satyajit Ray is an extraordinary artist in writing ghost stories. The ghosts in his stories are full of variety; there is not a trace of monotony. The unbelievable ghosts become extraordinary in Satyajit's stories in a very simple way. He is also exceptional in creating a suitable environment for the ghosts to inhabit. Satyajit Ray has written quite a few ghost stories. However, due to our limited scope, we will attempt to express Satyajit Ray's thoughts on the supernatural through a discussion of three of his stories: ‘Abhiram’, ‘Anathbabur Bhoy’, and ‘Badur Bibhiskika’.
