ABSTRACT | ||
The history of the origin of numbers and number systems is a vast and interesting subject. Numbers are deeply connected with the progress of human civilization. Numbers have been an intregal part for calculation in every aspect of human society, from the earliest times to the present day. When the use of numbers actually began is a great mystery. The history of number systems, like the history of the development of human society, is a dynamic and continuous process. Egypt is the origin of numbers. According to anthropologists, human life originated about 2 million years ago. Along with the various geographical transformations of the earth in the course of time, people have also changed radically. Gradually human society started to live in groups in a community. The need for numbers in expression, calculation and various other fields arose right from the time when organized human societies started to become civilized. In order to meet the demands of daily life along with the development of civilization, people invented various number systems which have evolved over time. Numeral systems developed in Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman, Etruscans, Mayan, Cistercian civilizations differed in application and characteristics. These civilizations first attempted to interpret numbers through symbols or letters. The use of zero was absent from most number systems. Each civilization developed the concept of number system according to their own needs. Chronologically, the Indian mathematician “Aryabhata” laid the foundations of the modern number system using zero (0) as a number. The invention and use of these ancient numerical systems have made an unimaginable contribution to the development of human civilization and the practice of knowledge. The invention of the modern number system which includes zero has revolutionized the field of calculation. The main purpose of this article is to discuss the history of numerology, the evolution of various ancient numerology systems that led to the foundation of the modern numeration system. I do strongly believe that will help us understand how numbers have become an integral part of human society. | ||
