Santiniketan in the Memoirs of Sanjida Khatun Suparna Mondal, Research Scholar, Centre for Comparative Literature, Bhasha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
From the very inception of Visva-Bharati, students, scholars, and teachers have come to Santiniketan from across the world. Many students also come from the neighbouring country, Bangladesh. These students later form a special connection with Santiniketan. Sanjida Khatun was one of them. She became famous later in life as a Rabindrasangeet singer and founder of Chhayanaut, but she spent her early days in Santiniketan. She wrote about her memories of Santiniketan in her books titled ‘Santiniketaner Dinguli’ and ‘Sahaj Kothin Dwande Chhonde.’ These books reflect life in Santiniketan at that time. As East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) was going through a lot of turmoil at the time, Santiniketan became her place of refuge. This essay aims to discuss Sanjida Khatun’s experience in Santiniketan, as recounted in her memoirs.
