ABSTRACT | ||
June 16, 1925, marks an irreparable loss in the politics of communal harmony in Bengal. It was a turning point in Hindu-Muslim political relations in Bengal. On this day, we lost a beloved and revered leader of all communities in Bengal—Hindus and Muslims alike—a true friend of the nation, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das. The year 2025 marks the centenary of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das’s death, which has been commemorated with great solemnity. At a time of deep communal crisis in Bengal and across India, Chittaranjan Das emerged as a beacon of communal harmony. In just eight years of active political life, he secured a place in the hearts of Bengalis for his religious tolerance. Through this tolerance, he deeply understood the Hindu-Muslim issue in the politics of the Indian subcontinent. Among his political contributions, the most significant was the formulation of the Hindu-Muslim Agreement, known as the Bengal Pact, aimed at establishing and preserving harmony between the Hindu and Muslim communities in British-ruled Bengal. The Bengal Pact remains a remarkable example of Chittaranjan’s religious tolerance and secularism. This article discusses Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das’s ideals, thoughts, and strategies regarding communal harmony. It explores how his religious liberalism made him a deeply trusted political figure among Bengal’s Muslim community. The article also delves into how communal separatism began and developed in contemporary Bengal’s politics, and how Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das strived to resist it. Through this article, we attempt to pay humble tribute to Deshbandhu by remembering his ideals, vision, and approach to communal unity. | ||
