The Concept of Power in Neo-Nyaya: A Philosophical Survey
Sourav Mazumdar, Research Scholar, Dept. of Philosophy, University of Burdwan,West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The discussion of Pada and padartha is an important topic of Neo-Nyaya philosophy. Although we can get the etymological idea of Pada and padartha from the level of grammar, the explanation of how a Pada can refer to a specific padartha and why any Pada cannot refer to any padartha remains a foggy one. But in Indian philosophy, especially in Neo-Nyaya philosophy, following all the rules of grammar, a complete and evaluative discussion of this can be found. However, the power by which a particular Pada can refer to a specific padartha will be the refuge of the byakti? Or the jati? Or the akrti? Or the jatyakrtibisistabyakti? Different sects hold different opinions on this matter in Indian philosophy. However, although all these opposing opinions are mentioned, without prolonging the subject by discussing them in detail, the present article has mainly presented the opinion of the jatisaktibadi Mandan Mishra as the purbapaksi and the opinions of the Neo-Nyaya Jagadish Tarkalankar and Vishwanath Nyayapanchanan as the sid'dhantapaksoi.
