ABSTRACT | ||
Abhijit Sen's novel 'Rahu Chandaler Haar' is a unique creation of Bengali Literature. In this novel, the author introduces the reader to a specific nomadic clan called Bajikar. Bajikar verily refers to rootless nomads. Any thought of stability in life is as if a utopian concept for them. But they do realize the importance of being stable in life. As such, nurturing pure faith in their ancestor Rahu, Bajikars search for their own piece of land that will define their existence. This novel has portrayed this timeless journey of the Bajikars and thereby the readers get introduced to many an episode of history and the-then political scenario. In this sense, 'Rahu Chandaler Haar’ is also a burning documentary of the era. The storyline of the novel has been skillfully woven within a temporal frame that starts a bit before the partition of the country and culminates roughly in the middle of the twentieth century; thus, depicting the societal, historical and political situation of that period. Along with various stories, myths, beliefs, traditions prevalent among them, Abhijit Sen’s narrative beautifully pictures the Bajikar’s struggle for existence and their quest for a new dawn. The present discussion is an attempt to highlight this religion-less, land-less Bajikar’s life-long journey towards preserving its existence. | ||
