German Philosopher Friedrich wilhelm Nietzsche stated that people wear masks not only before others but also before themselves. This self-deception weakens them, taking them away from the truth. In light of this idea, Badal Sarkar’s play ‘Baki Itihas’ explores the hidden consciousness of human life. The play shows that beyond recorded history, every individual carries within them many unspoken and forgotten events – forming their own silent, private history. People wish to proudly share their joyful memories and even their sorrows or failures to gain attention as part of life's struggle. However, beneath these public memories remain buried events tied to shame, perverted desires, and fear. When such suppressed truths emerge during soul-searching, people often face severe crisis, even choosing the path of suicide. In Baki Itihas, one character commits suicide while another attempts it. The playwright does not present any specific reason, instead weaving a web of events to reveal the depth of human despair and fragmented consciousness. The play remains deeply relevant today, as it forces us to reflect on the hidden realities within ourselves, in an era obsessed with publicity and outward appearances. Thus, ‘Baki Itihas’ stands as a powerful work in Bengali drama that transcends genre, exploring self-deception, perverted desires, and the painful truths embedded in human life and death. | ||
