The Koch dynasty was founded in the sixteenth century by Maharaja Biswa Singha. The literary practice began in this region in the fourteenth-fifteenth century. From the reign of Maharaja Biswa Singha to that of Harendranarayan various works such as translated literature, Mangal Kavya, narrative poetry, Leela and Bhajan songs, Nat, Panchali and folklore etc were found. Literary works which flourished in the Cooch Behar Raj Sabha during the Sixteenth-seventeenth centuries came to a halt in the eighteenth centuries. It flourished again from the time of Maharaja Harendranarayan in the nineteenth century. The reign of Maharaja Harendranarayan is a bright chapter in the literary history of Cooch Behar State. He aecended the throne at a very young age when the state was in turmoil. To restore the situation, Queen Mother Kamteshwari Devi managed the kingdom with the support of the British government. Once Maharaja Harendranarayan reached maturity, he assumed full responsibility for governance. Maharaja Harendranarayan was proficient in Literature, art, music, and painting. He translated the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Puranas. Alongside his own literary creations, his patronage attracted many talented individuals to his court, transforming it into a hub of literary activity. During his reign, the royal court became the center of literary pursuits, including studies of the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas, Mangal Kavya, history, philosophy, scriptures, and music. Through Maharaja Harendranarayan’s initiatives, the Cooch Behar royal court contributed immensely to Bengali literature, leaving a lasting legacy. | ||
