Empowerment of Marginalized Women: Based on Selected Short Stories of Mahasweta Devi Pratyusha Das, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Visva-Bharati, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The history of women’s deprivation is a long-standing norm in our society and civilization. And in a society where an entire community is looked down upon as lower class, the struggle to establish the rights of women from that community was even more challenging. Yet, these women did not live lives like helpless, destitute beings. On the contrary, they fought and earned their social, political and economic rights. Mahasweta Devi successfully portrayed that struggle with detailed realism. Having spent a significant part of her life with these marginalized communities, she had the opportunity to closely observe the women of those groups, becoming a direct witness to their resilient and combative spirit. In Mahasweta Devi’s short stories, we can clearly see the narrative of women’s efforts to establish their socio-economic and political spheres through confident resistance. I have attempted to discuss that effort of women’s empowerment in marginalized societies through a selection of Mahasweta Devi’s stories.
