Language, Psychology, and Philosophical Conflict in Kamalkumar Majumdar’s Fiction: An Analytical Reading Sadia Afrin, PhD Research Scholar (University of Dhaka), Senior Lecturer, Department of Bengali Language and Literature, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB)
ABSTRACT | ||
Kamalkumar Majumdar stands as one of the most radical and boundary-breaking writers in Bangla literature. This paper offers a critical exploration of his distinct narrative style, psychological depth, and philosophical complexity. Through the analysis of selected short stories such as Lal Juto, Madhu, Jol, Teish, Mallika Bahar, and Motilal Padri, the study reveals how Majumdar intricately weaves themes of love, sexuality, identity, social inequality, and the layered sorrows of marginalized lives. His writings reflect significant traces of Freudian libido theory, Judith Butler’s notion of gender performativity, and existential inquiry. Majumdar’s language oscillates between the poetic and abstract, and the earthy and colloquial; making language itself an aesthetic entity that provokes thought, conflict, and introspection in the reader. His portrayal of female psychology and social positioning particularly marks him as a subversive and singular voice within Bangla fiction. This research establishes that Majumdar’s literary achievement lies not only in thematic richness but also in his innovative linguistic architecture and intellectual modernity. His stories are not merely texts to be read, but spaces for deep contemplation.
