ABSTRACT | ||
Folk arts is an integral part of Bangladeshi cultural history. Traditional arts and crafts evolve over time through the age-old folk practices. Folk art uses traditional motifs reflecting the land and its people. It generally includes those articles that are traditionally made by communities of people to satisfy their religious, social and aesthetic needs. The folk art of Jessore reflects the lifestyle, beliefs and traditions of its rural communities. It also focuses the expression of rural women, their hopes and fears, their desires and aspirations. Jessore is a historically and culturally significant area and it is one of the largest districts of the south-western region of Bangladesh. As a source of Bengal’s socio-economic, religious, cultural history patachitra, pirichitra, kulachitra, alpana, nakshi kantha, nakshi pakha, nakshi shika, bamboo and cane crafts, shola, pottery, terracotta etc. the folklore of Jessore is very important. The folk art of Jessore has distinctive characteristics than that of other regions. But now this traditional aesthetic excellence is going to be deleted somewhat with the flow of modern way of life and expansion of urbanization, industrialization, improvement of technology and develop of communication. In order to save the traditional rural cultural heritage of this country, it is necessary to revitalize them. The present paper attempts to examine the characteristics and progress of traditional folk art of Jessore. | ||
