Magic Realism in Afsar Ahmed’s Novel Aloikik Dinarat Rehana Khatun, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Taki Government College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Magic Realism in literature is currently a subject of much discussion and debate. Though this style originated in foreign lands, it has found its way into contemporary Bengali Fiction as well. However, its seeds were already sown in the fairy tales we heard during our childhood. The reality that was once portrayed through enchantment, mystery and dreams has now returned with a new dimension in today’s complex and dialectical social environment. Like renowned novelists such as Mahasweta Devi, Akhtaruzzaman Elias, Amar Mitra, Kinnar Roy— Afsar Amed has also made successful use of Magic Realism in several of his novels. In ‘Aloukik Dinraat’ he presents harsh, difficult realities through dreams, imagination and fantasy. In the novel Talib, a resident of the village Nupur, has been missing for one and a half years. In his absence, his wife Shabnam suffers greatly, evoking sympathy from the villagers. People are sent to Kolkata to search for Talib. To learn about his current situation, the villagers consult a fortune-teller. Khaled chacha, well known for his dreams, sees Talib multiple times in his sleep and shares the interpretations of those dreams with the villagers. One day, Talib returs— with twenty-eight questions. The villagers being to see him as a character straight out of a fairy tale. From this perception, a new story is born. The novel also explores dream sequences involving an old woman Jaigun. It contains criticism of traditional bookish education and touches upon contemporary politics and the complexities of marital ralationships with finesse. ‘Aloukik Dinraat’ showcases a blend of reality, fantasy and absurdity, sudden shifts in time, a labyrinthine plot, an atmosphere of fear and suspense and a narrative that often breaks conventional cause and effect logic. These are the key characteristics of the novel, making it a notable example of Magic Realism in Bengali Literature
