Folk Art of the Barak Valley: An Analytical Study

ABSTRACT
The Barak valley is a diverse valley located in the southern part of Assam.The Valley is named Barak valley after the Barak River, which flows through it.The Barak valley comprises three Districts, Sribhumi(Karimganj),Cachar and Hailakandi. These three districts wrapped in lush greenery are surrounded by rivers forest and Small Hills.The Barak region is a diverse area, richly inhabited by Various communities and ethine group. Despite the Bengali majority in the Barak valley it is also the settlement ofmanipuri,mizo,chakma, and many other hill communities. The Barak valley is a confluence of multilingual and multicultural communities.In the Barak valley communities such as the Bengali, Manipuri and Tea-tribes engage in a wide range of crafts.In the Barak valley, different groups of people engage in distinct forms of folk arts.In this diverse. Barak valley people create various crafts for daily use and income generation.There is a variety of artistic diversity, such as kantha embroidery, Various bamboo crafts,clay furniture and different tools made from cane and wood. While many many people make these items for everyday needs, some earn their livelihood by selling them. The materials used in this folk art are easily accessible to people. Bamboo,cane,wood,clay etc, are the primary components of folk art, using these materials, people apply their sharp intellect to create various beautiful shapes and designs. The folk art of the Barak valley has become an appealing and widely used element in various places,both nationally and internationally.
