Dalit in Bengali literature and Sharatchandra
Kiran Mandal, Research Scholar, Dept. of Bengali, University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The word ‘Dalit’ is a Hindi term, but it has been used in the Bengali language long before gaining prominence. Over time, ‘Dalit’ has become a unifying term representing a broader caste community. Dalits are essentially the oppressed and marginalized. The term is associated with various concepts, such as lower caste, marginalized community, sufferers, outsiders, and the downtrodden. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay highlights their struggles in his writings, helping readers of our society understand their plight. However, he does not explicitly propose solutions for their emancipation; instead, he leaves this responsibility to his readers. Without his literary portrayal, the sufferings, hardships, and social injustices faced by Dalits might have remained unnoticed. Thus, the representation of Dalits in his works plays a significant role in Bengali literature.
