Ashtam Garbh: A Tale of Social Reality Adorned with Mythological Metaphors
Sourav Mukherjee, Researcher, Department of Bengali, YBN University, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Bani Basu’s Ashtam Garbh is a unique
novel where reality and imagination blend seamlessly, exploring the physical
and psychological suffering of women, the crisis of self-identity, the
struggles of motherhood, and social oppression in a profound manner.At the
heart of the narrative lies the mystical beliefs and rituals of the Shibprasad
and Durgaprasad families, creating a bridge between reality and mythology. The
birth of three children in this setting is not just a familial event but
symbolizes a deep philosophical exploration of life, destiny, and existence.Set
against the backdrop of war, partition, and the breakdown of family structures,
the novel unfolds through the perspective of children, portraying the
complexities, conflicts, and struggles of human life. As their innocent minds
confront reality, they gradually come to understand violence, betrayal, and the
fight for survival.Bani Basu’s distinctive literary style and philosophical
approach turn this novel into a profound psychological and existential inquiry,
compelling readers to reflect on the fundamental question—"What is the
true meaning of human existence?"
